Paul Jacob Marperger

Nürnberg 1656 - Dresden 1730

Paul Jacob Marperger was born on June 27, 1656 in Nuremberg. As the son of a German officer, he was enrolled in the theology department of the University in Altdorf at the age of ten. He never actually attended the university, instead beginning a business apprenticeship at a trading house in Lyon, France.
There he became acquainted with the advanced methods of French commerce. In the next years, he journeyed to many places in Europe, including Geneva, Hamburg, Lübeck, Copenhagen, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, and Vienna. Marperger's experiences during his education and travels can be found in his manifold writings.
With the publication of these writings, he was the first German writer in the areas of mercantilism, national economy, and fiscal accounting. Marperger's observations brought him much attention from economic and scientific circles, and he was inducted into the Prussian Society of the Sciences in 1708.
Marperger was appointed to the Royal Court and Commerce Council of Poland and the Electorate of Saxony in 1724 and followed his appointment to Dresden. He subsequently published a number of writings in his own publishing house.
Paul Jacob Marperger died on October 27, 1730.
